BERLIN, Dec 22 (FAM) – Monday’s deadly attack in Berlin has focused attention again on the potential use of freight and other commercial vehicles to commit acts of terrorism. But unlike July’s deadly attack in Nice, when the perpetrator had hired the vehicle themselves from a local vehicle-hire firm, the Berlin attack apparently involved the hijack of the vehicle and the murder of its rightful driver before the perpetrator used the vehicle as a deadly weapon by driving it into a crowded market.

According to The Guardian, the Polish driver found dead in the truck that ploughed into the Berlin Christmas market on Monday night “had fought for his life” before being killed by the unknown assailant or assailants behind the attack. The driver was identified as Lukasz Urban, a 37-year-old working for Polish road freight company Ariel Zurawski.
