COPENHAGEN, Dec 14 (FAM) – Digitalisation is the key to container shipping’s future and profitability, but digitalised freight transactions will be better for customers if controlled by those conducting the operation than by intermediaries that neither control the ship nor the cargo.

That’s according to Robbert van Trooijen, Maersk Line’s Asia Pacific CEO, who told Lloyd’s Loading List that improved digitalisation of supply chains was set to remove inefficiencies, help lines recoup some of their losses due to the imbalance of supply and demand, and improve customer service. He said the digitalisation of freight transactions was already an accelerating trend, and further improvements in adoption rates would benefit both lines and shippers.
