TOKYO, Nov 8 (FAM) – Plans announced last week to combine the container divisions of Japan’s three largest shipping lines will further isolate medium-sized carriers outside the new global ‘top 7’ and increase pressure to consolidate, according to industry analyst Drewry.

In Drewry’s latest Container Insight Weekly report, published yesterday, Drewry said that after recent bankruptcies and merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, more than half of all global capacity was now controlled by the top five carriers.
